Abbots Langley: Did a Great War Soldier Live at My House?

From the extensive research carried out by the “Back to the Front” Project over 200 houses where local Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen lived at the time of the Great War have been identified by street number or house name. From mid-May 2018 a window sticker will be distributed to each modern day property together with an Information Pack with the stories of servicemen and women that lived at each individual house. Decorating Parts of the Abbots Langley Village

Abbots Langley Great War Walk

A two hour walk through the village led by historians from the Abbots Langley Local History Society will use research from the Back to the Front archives, including the stories of over 700 villagers that served, to tell the story of Abbots Langley in the Great War. The walk will conclude at the 1st Abbots Langley Scout Hut in Langley Road, where refreshments will be available.

Bedmond Soldier Plaque Project

A specially designed Remembrance Plaque will be distributed to the current occupants of the houses where servicemen from Bedmond lived at the time of the Great War, and each house will receive a pack including the stories of those World War 1 occupants of the property.

The Abbots Langley Branch of the Royal British Legion present a talk by Tim Wigmore from Garston Manor School will provide an insight to the Great War through the life of Herbert Bushby Cave. Tim will tell the story of Herbert’s time in the Territorial Army and his War Service. This event is part of the Abbots Langley Festival.

Abbots Langley Scouts – “Scouting in Hertfordshire During the Great War” – a talk by Frank Brittain (Hertfordshire Scouts’ Archivist)
